BOOKMARK THE CORE | LIVRES EN VILLE

Bookmark the Core and some of Ottawa’s most prominent architects are calling for an open international competition for the design of the new Central Library at LeBreton Flats.

Architects Tony Griffiths, Stig Harvor and Ed Pollitt along with building cost consultant Jeff Ware and architecture critic Rhys Phillips, remind Ottawans that many of the world’s most celebrated new libraries, from Seattle to Helsinki, had a jury choose their award-winning designs. From the Sydney Opera House to Toronto City Hall, some of the greatest public buildings were designed through an open competition.

Bookmark the Core and these architects want a role for the public in comparing proposed designs for the $168 million new library.
The Canadian Competition Catalogue lists eighteen libraries across Canada that were built through an open process. The Competition Catalogue demonstrates that the public interest is actually better served by the market providing options.

The City of Gatineau, Ottawa’s neighbour, is planning an architectural competition for the design of its new branch library.
Now is the moment for us to ensure that our new central library will seek the best designs from around the world, so that generations to come will look upon this building with pride.

We are advocating for Ottawa's library to be in the downtown core, to be the right size, and to be the result of an international design competition with a full public engagement process.
